Director Statement

The ocean is a symphony of connection. Every species, every current, every coral polyp plays its part. With Dolphins of the Reef, I set out to capture not just the stunning beauty of coral reefs, but the delicate and vital relationships that hold these ecosystems together. This film is an immersive journey into one of the most urgent environmental stories of our time: the global crisis facing coral reefs, and the fragile, fascinating bonds that are at risk of being lost.

Filmed in breathtaking virtual reality, Dolphins of the Reef takes audiences beneath the surface of the Red Sea, one of the few places on Earth where coral reefs are thriving despite rising ocean temperatures. Among the most unexpected discoveries we made during production was a mysterious behavior exhibited by local bottlenose dolphins. These dolphins routinely rub their bodies against specific coral species. Thanks to the groundbreaking work of marine biologists Dr. Shireen Rahimi and Dr. Angela Zeltener, we learn that this behavior is a form of self-medication.

Certain varieties of Red Sea coral release a unique mucus when touched, rich in antimicrobial properties. The dolphins, in turn, seem to instinctively use these corals medicinally to treat their skin. This extraordinary interaction is a living example of symbiosis, where the reef not only shelters marine life but also actively supports the well-being of its inhabitants.

Through VR, viewers experience this connection firsthand, from swimming beside dolphins in crystalline waters to witnessing the coral’s response to touch. It’s a rare opportunity to see intelligence and nature in harmony, and a powerful reminder of how much we still have to learn from our oceans.

Dolphins of the Reef is both a celebration and a warning. It is a call to action, grounded in hope. If we can learn from the resilience of the Red Sea reefs. If we can understand and protect the vital interdependence of species like dolphins and coral, we may yet find a way to safeguard these living worlds for generations to come.
